he primary concerns of the book surround the idea that two races of cat like creatures, the Herbaht and the Eschiff have evolved concurrently on a planet about sixty light years hence from Earth. The Herbaht are fewer in number, but are generally in control. Certain members of their race are occasionally elevated to a position where they are reverred as gods and goddesses by the Eschiff, even to the point of having temples built in their name.
Each god or goddess is in control of a city. they are immortal, but only because of a special serum that they get from sacrificing a member of the local Eschiff population. There is a lottery once a month and it is considered a great honour to serve the god or goddess in this way even though none of these servants are ever seen again!
There is an uprising among the Eshiff and two of the Herbaht goddesses flee the planet, they land on earth.
And so ends the prologue
The majority of the story take place a thousand years later in the middle of the thirtieth century when the two ‘goddesses’ have had a chance to create nan entirely new race, although they are still greatly outnumbered by humanity.
In order to maintain their immortality the two ‘goddesses’ now feed on humans once every month or so. In order not to be ostracized by their own race ,they teach their offspring that they all need to eat the flesh of humans to survive.
The book covers the lives of several people during a ten day period
It begins with the government announces a crackdown on acts of Herbaht relating terrorism and beginning to purge the herbaht race from existence. This includes those that have been domesticated and live peacefully with humans, surviving of pills that supposedly replace the nutrients that the herbaht need from feeding on humans.
Herbaht look human enough that they can disguise themselves fairly easily with makeup and meld with the local population.
When the crack down is announced, rather than handing his pet Kitty over to the authorities; George Lomax releases her onto the streets to fend for herself. There she meets February, a young huntress who offers to look after Kitty, teach her the ways of the herbaht and try to rid her of her domestication.
Elsewhere the feline member of a rock band is taken into custody. Her master who also happens to be her husband starts to pursue a course that will rescue his beloved. Fortunately, one of the other band members used to work as a guard at the local cattery and still has contacts there.
The Cattery is the place where Herbaht used to be breed in preparation for sale to the general public and is now being used as a kind of death camp for the extermination of Herbaht kind.
There are several other characters in the book. Indeed, there is an entire third race involved.
