T

hough he may not speak of them, the memories still dwell inside Jacob Jankowski’s ninety-something-year-old mind. Memories of himself as a young man, tossed by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. Memories of a world filled with freaks and clowns, with wonder and pain and anger and passion; a world with its own narrow, irrational rules, its own way of life, and its own way of death. The world of the circus: to Jacob it was both salvation and a living hell.

Jacob was there because his luck had run out–orphaned and penniless, he had no direction until he landed on this locomotive “ship of fools.” It was the early part of the Great Depression, and everyone in this third-rate circus was lucky to have any job at all. Marlena, the star of the equestrian act, was there because she fell in love with the wrong man, a handsome circus boss with a wide mean streak. And Rosie the elephant was there because she was the great gray hope, the new act that was going to be the salvation of the circus; the only problem was, Rosie didn’t have an act–in fact, she couldn’t even follow instructions. The bond that grew among this unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and ultimately, it was their only hope for survival.

Surprising, poignant, and funny, Water for Elephants is that rare novel with a story so engrossing, one is reluctant to put it down; with characters so engaging, they continue to live long after the last page has been turned; with a world built of wonder, a world so real, one starts to breathe its air.

unning the Rift follows the progress of Jean Patrick Nkuba from the day he knows that running will be his life to the moment he must run to save his life. A naturally gifted athlete, he sprints over the thousand hills of Rwanda and dreams of becoming his country’s first Olympic medal winner in track. But Jean Patrick is a Tutsi in a world that has become increasingly restrictive and violent for his people. As tensions mount between the Hutu and Tutsi, he holds fast to his dream that running might deliver him, and his people, from the brutality around them.

Winner of the Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction, Naomi Benaron has written a stunning and gorgeous novel that–through the eyes of one unforgettable boy– explores a country’s unraveling, its tentative new beginning, and the love that binds its people together.

ope is hard to come by in the hard-luck town of Willow Creek. Sam Pickett and five young men are about to change that.

Sam Pickett never expected to settle in this dried-up shell of a town on the western edge of the world. He’s come here to hide from the violence and madness that have shattered his life, but what he finds is what he least expects. There’s a spirit that endures in Willow Cree, Montana. It seems that every inhabitant of this forgotten outpost has a story, a reason for taking a detour to this place–or a reason for staying.

As the coach of the hapless high school basketball team (zero wins, ninety-three losses), Sam can’t help but be moved by the bravery he witnesses in the everyday lives of people–including his own young players–bearing their sorrows and broken dreams. How do they carry on, believing in a future that seems to be based on the flimsiest of promises? Drawing on the strength of the boys on the team, sharing the hope they display despite insurmountable odds, Sam finally begins to see a future worth living.

Author Stanley Gordon West has filled the town of Willow Creek with characters so vividly cast that they become real as relatives, and their stories–so full of humor and passion, loss and determination–illuminate a path into the human heart.

Red River Blue (Deluxe)Red River Blue (Deluxe) by Blake Shelton

Genre(s): Country

From an Amazon Top Reviewer:

Red River Blue” is Blake Shelton’s ninth studio album and clearly his best. The songs on this album define what country music is all about: High quality tunes, amazing singing, great musicianship, solid production, and well written lyrics. “Honey Bee” starts things off and, considering it’s already sold over a million downloads, is the perfect song to get the music flowing. He sings some beautiful harmonies about his new wife, Miranda Lambert, and the results are amazing with a pop-country crossover appeal. “God Gave Me You” was written by David Barnes (an indie pop artist based in Nashville) and is a power ballad with an almost rock feel to it. It features a gorgeous melody that few others could pull off. “Get Some” has phenomenal finger picked acoustic guitar and sliding dobro that captures the epitome of that country music feeling. “Good Ole Boys” and “Hey” are both hard-twanging anthem-like country songs that show off Shelton’s unique charm and charisma. Martina McBride sings on “I’m Sorry” and is an amazing powerhouse ballad. “Sunny In Seattle” has an instantly familiar (and extremely catchy) groove that you’ll swear you’ve heard before. The album closes with the title track, a song about grief filled broken hearts; Shelton is so dynamic and has so much soul you can FEEL his pain. This record effectively captures the charm and soul of Shelton’s voice while highlighting his playful personality and incredible vocal talent. Definitely a winner!
