hirty years after the Civil War’s Battle of the Wilderness left him maimed, Abel Truman has found his way to the edge of the continent, the rugged, majestic coast of Washington State, where he lives alone in a driftwood shack with his beloved dog. Wilderness is the story of Abel, now an old and ailing man, and his heroic final journey over the snowbound Olympic Mountains. It’s a quest he has little hope of completing but still must undertake to settle matters of the heart that predate even the horrors of the war.
As Abel makes his way into the foothills, the violence he endures at the hands of two thugs who are after his dog is crosscut with his memories of the horrors of the war, the friends he lost, and the savagery he took part in and witnessed. And yet, darkness is cut by light, especially in the people who have touched his life-from Jane Dao-Ming Poole, the daughter of murdered Chinese immigrants, to Hypatia, an escaped slave who nursed him back to life, and finally to the unbearable memory of the wife and child he lost as a young man. Haunted by tragedy, loss, and unspeakable brutality, Abel has somehow managed to hold on to his humanity, finding way stations of kindness along his tortured and ultimately redemptive path.
In its contrasts of light and dark, wild and tame, brutal and tender, and its attempts to reconcile a horrific war with the great evil it ended, Wilderness tells not only the moving tale of an unforgettable character, but a story about who we are as human beings, a people, and a nation. Lance Weller’s immensely impressive debut immediately places him among our most talented writers.

hen your old Auntie, sitting back in her favorite comfy chair, finally opens up and tells the family what it was really like in the good ol’ days, it may come somewhat as a surprise when she readily admits she is a lesbian and has been madly in love with your mother for the past sixty years or more. She’s not really an Aunt, you understand; but a friend of your mother’s whom you have always known as “Auntie.” You’re shown some old photos and she was a beautiful woman. Your mother, too, was beautiful. There is a photo of the two of them from years ago dancing, arms wrapped tightly about one another. They are obviously deeply in love. The most important thing, though, is that it doesn’t matter, not even a little bit, because you love your Auntie. She is just as much a part of the family as any one of you – including your father. She loves him too, you see – but not quite in the same way, of course.
Freya Anna Bergman, aka “Auntie”, has been commissioned to write the family history and wastes no time before revealing that one of the greatest tragedies in her life was when Marshall picked Leslie out of the crowd on that bright July morning on the Wolfe Island Ferry so long ago. Freya is sometimes cynical but always intriguing. She is wise, sometimes silly, and always compassionate; but no matter where the dialog might take her, she always returns to her love for Leslie and the family that grew up around them. Your Auntie and your mother, and your father too, are perhaps among the few who can justifiably claim that three need not be a crowd.

Live At The Ryman by Jonny Lang
Genre(s): Blues
From an Amazon Top Reviewer:
have had the pleasure of seeing Jonny in concert recently and would happily go again. In addition, Jonny’s live recording of “Red Light” came on Pandora and I instantly fell in love with it. I bought this CD primarily for that recording because I think it is phenomenal. Other stand-outs include the live “Breakin’ Me,” “A Quitter Never Wins,” which has guitar playing that will knock your socks off, “One Person at a Time,” “Bump in the Road,” and “Give Me Up Again.” “Turn Around” is OK but I’ve heard him do better versions of it in concert, as with “I Am.” “Thankful” is one of those songs that I can only listen to when I’m in the mood for it. “Lie to Me” is still excellent; the vocals are superb as is the guitar playing, but it is different. I almost wish that Jonny had recorded the acoustic to electric version that he does in concerts sometimes. I only wish there were more live recordings of Jonny’s music. I also wish that we could hear live recordings of songs that Jonny doesn’t do as often in concert. Altogether, this is a wonderful live album.
