Pixelscroll’s Pick of the Day for 07-16-2014!

Mandatory Fun Mandatory Fun by “Weird Al” Yankovic

Genre(s): Miscellaneous, Comedy

From an Amazon Top Reviewer:
It’s oddly gratifying to see “Weird Al” put out what is clearly one of his best albums at this stage of his career. Whether it’s his inspired parodies, which perfectly pair his particular lyric style with the music of the originals (“Tacky” brilliantly spoofs Pharrell Williams’s “Happy,” for one) or his originals that mimic bands like Southern Culture on the Skids (“Lame Claim to Fame”), Pixies (“First World Problems:) and Crosby, Stills, and Nash (“Mission Statement”), Yankovic sounds energized and totally locked into what’s made him a musical-comedy institution over the last 30 years.

“Weird Al” is at his best when he brings joy to his approach to songs. On his lesser songs of the past decade, the songs I didn’t like as much were the ones where he just sounded bitter. On Mandatory Fun, however, the songs come from a really positive perspective, and the lyrics return to ideas like skewering the idea of modern fame, which makes it feel current. Additionally, he wisely chooses the big dance-pop hits of the last year or two, understanding that rock is not the big genre these days. So “Weird Al” definitely doesn’t feel out of touch this time out – he is of the moment, nailing song after song and sounding damn good to boot.

Pixelscroll’s Pick of the Day for 06-28-2014!

FuegoFuego by Phish

Genre(s): Rock

From an Amazon Top Reviewer:
I so wanted to write my review after my first listen, I was that impressed. But I did not want to over react, so I have now got seven full listens in. This truly is very close to a five star album, if there ever was. I have been a fan since Junta, but have not liked any of their or Trey’s studio albums for a very long time (since Billy Breathes). One has to give Bob Ezrin some major credit here as the production is simply outstanding and helps bring these songs to life in a major way! From the opening jam workout on the title track, to the cool influenced Steely Dan vibe of The Line (do not blow this song off if you find to pop sounding as it really grows on you). I also love the way they let the old school Grateful Dead hop up on their horses and take one hell of a ride on Devotion To A Dream (what a cool jam on this one) and the incredible Wingsuit that closes the album (check the Ezrin influence on the jam towards the end, remember he produced The Wall along with Waters/Gilmour), this really finds Phish in a fantastic place musically! The interplay between each and every member shines though out! I have read some find the song Wombat is a questionable add, but the lyrics about the Fish TV show with Abe Vigoda are pretty amusing and the song barely clocks in at over 3 minutes, plus placed towards the end. Of course two of my favorites will always be Junta and Lawn Boy, but if some of the die hard Phish fans can’t see through the Marley smoke, they are truly missing one of the best things this band has ever created! Updated after a few more listens and this is really one bad ass album!

Pixelscroll’s Pick of the Day for 06-19-2014!

UltraviolenceUltraviolence by Lana Del Rey

Genre(s): Alternative Rock

From an Amazon Top Reviewer:
This is pretty much an acoustic album, heavy on piano, guitar, and drums. It gives a classic rock of the seventies feel and allows the artist’s voice to really stand out. It’s her voice that really soars on these dark ballads giving the album it’s texture and tone. The opening track, Cruel World, starts the ball rolling with beautiful lyrics and complex vocals. F***ed my Way Up to the Top features the same rich vocals and dark lyrics. This might be the one thing people will criticize about the piece, that many of the songs sound alike. But upon a second or third listen they reveal themselves to be quite unique individually as well as working together as a whole. The subtle arrangements of Black Beauty and the more complex West coast are my two favorites. I definitely had to listen more than once to really appreciate the unique music on this album.

Led Zeppelin III (Deluxe Edition) Led Zeppelin III (Deluxe Edition) by Led Zeppelin

Genre(s): Rock, Classic Rock

From an Amazon Top Reviewer:
I would have to say that “Led Zeppelin III” is by far their most under-appreciated album to date. Many fans hardly recognize it for the beautiful music it contains. Sure, it’s not as catchy, driving, grabbing as some of the more popular Zepp albums, but really that’s the basis of its appeal. “III” is not something you can imagine filled football stadiums moshing to. It’s what’s in the background as you ask someone to pass the coffee on a Sunday. And critics, as many as their fans did at the same time, sold them out in the early 1970′s. Zepp is heralded as a “Blues Metal Band” (sounds like an oxymoron to me) and people expected the same high pitched wisping Robert Plant vocals to accompany Page’s blues riffs. But when “III” hit, everyone was disillusioned. Teased with “Immigrant Song” and Part 2 of Friends, “Celebration Day,” no one could lower their heart rate in time to appreciate acoustic classics like “Tangerine,” “Gallows Pole,” and “That’s the Way.” Perhaps they could swallow the bluesy “Since I’ve been Loving You” or “Hats Off to Roy Harper” having been introduced to the same sound in their 1969 debut, but on the whole they were disappointed.
Years later “Immigrant Song,” “Friends,” “Bron-Y-Aur Stomp,” and the unreleased “Hey, Hey What Can I Do” rank among Zeppelin’s greatest songs. Page seemed to be the one taking all the risks, hanging up the legendary Les Paul to fiddle with alternate acoustic guitar tunnings (Open D 4th fret capo on “That’s the Way,” Open G tuning on “Bron-Y-Aur”). And after the dust has settled on the bands monster career, “III” is behind only “IV,” “Houses of the Holy,” and “Physical Graffiti” as Zepp’s finest album.

Pixelscroll’s Pick of the Day for 06-01-2014!

Below Paradise Below Paradise by Tedashii

Genre(s): Rap & Hip-Hop

From an Amazon Top Reviewer:
In this Album, Tedashii is candid with his emotions, fears, and struggles. The overall tone…somber, mellow, deep. The message…life is hard, but through it all God is good. The story…God is sovereign and He’s purposefully working out his plan of redemption in our lives and in our world, through the good and the bad. What a glorious day it will be when His work is complete, He eliminates sin, and takes his church home where there will be no more pain, tears, and death and we will live joyful and victorious with our King for all eternity! Until then…here we remain, purposeful and trusting in Christ for strength to carry on His work…Below Paradise.
